BIRCH BARK BASKET OF THE SECWEPEMC MUSEUM

Birch Bark Basket of the Secwepemc Museum

Birch baskets were used for gathering and for storage. The baskets are made from a strip of bark from the Paper Birch tree; and it is stitched together with split cedar root. The rim was made by sewing a saskatoon branch around the top of the basket to make it more sturdy. These baskets were also used as vessels for steaming and boiling food. They were made waterproof by spreading Jack Pine pitch over the seams. http://www.secwepemcmuseum.com/
